What goes where

At CERN, we have:

  • Regular collections for small amounts of incinerable waste and paper/cardboard in waste containers situated near building entrances (schedule in French available here);
  • Collections on request for greater volumes of waste requiring skips.

We also have:

  • Regular scrap wood collections on the Swiss and French parts of the site (off-cuts not exceeding 1m3 can be deposited near the incinerable waste and paper/cardboard containers).

  Confidential papers

Description

This category refers to all documents of a confidential nature (paper ONLY, no folders or plastic wallets) that need to be disposed of separately from the usual waste paper/cardboard

left in the "box-it" bins in the offices.

Closed containers are provided on request in convenient places in buildings.

The discarded documents will be taken to a recycling center to be shredded and recycled by paper mills.

Disposal/exchange of the container and destruction of confidential papers are billed but the removal cost is included in the price. All costs are charged to the same code.

Description

This category refers ONLY to paper and cardboard (no folders or plastic wallets). The cardboard must be folded before being placed in the container.

Waste paper and cardboard includes printed administrative forms, reports, catalogues and packaging - no "Sagex" (expanded polystyrene) or plastic. 

It is also possible to buy at the CERN Stores a plastic tray with wheels (SCEM 55.60.03.267.0 managed by the Cleaning service).

Description

Scrap metal includes: 

  • Cast iron or steel parts from discarded or demolished objects (metal frames, old machines, etc...)
  • Surplus raw materials
  • metal shavings (essentially copper, stainless steel and aluminium)

Scrap metal must be sorted: each bin or skip must contain only metals of the same type.

For example, one bin for stainless steel, another for aluminium, another copper, another for steel, another for brass and another for lead.

Small quantities of wood (maximum 1m3 excluding wooden pallets marked "EUR") must be deposited directly or via the transport service (EDH transport request) in building 133. they will be treated and compacted directly on site. 

For quantities of wood over 1m3, please request a skip via the Service Portal.

For pallets measuring 120 cm x 80 cm and larked "EUR", a refundable deposit has been paid. They must WITHOUT EXCEPTON be returned to the Goods Reception (building 194 in Switzerland and building 904 in France)
